So how did you enjoy your run, Monsieur Sarkozy?

sarkozy joggingThere’s always one guy has to spoil it for the rest of us, isn’t there? Not content with being small, insufferably French, and wedded to leggy temptress Carla Bruni, Nicolas Sarkozy is now, apparently, causing lots of people to rethink the benefits/dangers of regular running, as you can see here.

Now, as much as anything, this goes to show just how fickle the media can be in all matters pertaining to health and exercise, as evidenced by this fairly recent and entirely contradictary report, also from the BBC website.

What it mainly does though is gives lots of people an excuse to shun a healthy run on the grounds that it may well cause your heart to explode out through your left knee.

And so, naturally, my Good lady Wife is now going to think that as a middle-aged man (albeit one who’s a lot taller than Sarkozy), I’m going to peg out from nervous exhaustion/coronary thrombosis next time I take to the streets for a little healthy and life-affirming exercise.

My question though, is why is it always politicians this happens to? Most people my age remember U.S. President Jimmy Carter flaking out while running. I’m fairly sure that Bill Clinton did the same thing. And I have a sneaking suspicion that Tony Blair had a similar heart problem going on.

So is it the case that the pressures of office plus being a regular runner are just too much for a middle-aged chap’s heart to take? Or are these guys just so keen on letting the world know that they own a pair of running shoes that they like to draw attention to the fact every now and then?

I know which theory my money is on…and think that it’s very much a case of ‘Somebody Call Me a Spin Doctor.’

At the end of the day, to coin a well-worn cliché, regular running is good for your heart, lungs, legs and general well-being; regardless of the fact that people very occasionally succumb to a pre-existing heart condition while running.

Now, if it was only good for the soul too, I’d see the point of politicians doing it…
